Germany dMAT Explained: A Complete Guide for Indian Students

Introduction
If you're planning to pursue a Master's degree in Germany, you're already familiar with the APS (Academic Evaluation Centre) process. It's an essential step for Indian students applying to German universities.
Now, there's another update you should know about.
We've covered everything you need to know in this guide. Let’s break it down.
What Is dMAT?
The Digital Master's Admission Test (dMAT) is a standardised online entrance examination introduced for students applying to selected Master's programmes in Germany.
The test is designed to evaluate whether applicants possess the academic skills and competencies required for postgraduate studies. Instead of relying only on previous academic records, participating universities can use dMAT as an additional assessment during the admission process.
Currently, dMAT is accepted only by participating German universities and Master's programmes. It is not a replacement for your bachelor's degree, language proficiency requirements, or APS Certificate.
Think of APS and dMAT as two separate steps. APS verifies your academic documents, while dMAT assesses your readiness for covered Master's programmes in Germany.
Who Needs to Take the dMAT?
The introduction of dMAT does not affect every student applying to Germany.
You may need to take the test if:
- You are applying for a Master's programme at a university that has adopted dMAT as part of its admission process.
- Your previous degree falls under one of these study fields:
- Engineering
- Commerce, Accounting, Finance, or Economics
- Business or Management
Who Does Not Need to Take The dMAT?
The dMAT does not apply to every Indian student planning to study in Germany. According to APS India, you are currently exempt if you fall into any of the following categories:
- You're applying for a Bachelor's programme in Germany.
- You're a Bachelor's student who has not yet completed at least 5 semesters of a 3-year degree or 7 semesters of a 4-year degree.
- You're applying for a PhD programme.
- Your previous degree does not belong to Engineering, Commerce, Accounting, Finance, Economics, Business, or Management.
- You're applying through an officially confirmed exchange programme, double-degree programme, or university partnership programme.
Key Date to Consider

Recognised dMAT Test Centres
The dMAT exam will be conducted at licensed test centres across India.
As of now, students can expect test centres in Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Chennai, Kolkata, Mananthavady, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Pune. The final list of available test centres will be displayed during the registration process.
The entire process, including registration, fee payment, test centre selection, technical support, and certificate issuance, will be managed by g.a.s.t., the official organisation responsible for administering the dMAT exam.
Key Points to Consider
1) dMAT Begins from the Summer 2027 Intake
Students applying for the Winter Semester 2026/27 are not required to take the dMAT.
The requirement comes into effect only for applications related to the Summer Semester 2027 intake and onwards, as the first dMAT certificates will be available from October 2026.
2) Check if Your Degree Falls Under the Affected Study Fields
Students with interdisciplinary degrees such as Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, or Financial Technology should carefully check the official list of affected study fields. If your degree is included, you'll need to take the dMAT for eligible Master's applications from Summer 2027 onwards.
3) A Low dMAT Score Doesn't Mean APS Rejection
The dMAT is not a pass-or-fail requirement for obtaining an APS Certificate. APS India continues to verify your academic documents, while the dMAT score is included as an additional part of your APS documentation.
A lower score does not automatically result in an APS rejection.
4) Previous APS Applications Are Not Affected
Students who submitted their complete APS application before the dMAT requirement was introduced do not need to take the dMAT for that application, even if their APS verification is still in progress.
The new rule applies only to eligible applications submitted after the announcement.
5) A Low dMAT Score Doesn't Automatically Mean University Rejection
German universities review every part of your application. While the dMAT score may be considered as part of the admission process, universities also review factors such as your academic performance, supporting documents, and programme-specific requirements. A low score alone does not automatically lead to rejection.
Final Thoughts
The dMAT requirement may seem like a big change, but with the right guidance, it's easy to navigate.
